I had read James Bryner's 'Baja,' last year, and was left with a cliff-hanger ending wanting more. When reading this latest novel from a different time and place altogether, he did not disappoint and again left me wishing to know more about what will happen to the characters that I got so close to. I echo what others have said about his knack to really pull you into the characters world, and get emotionally involved with the story. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment in this story!

Optimist Racing - A manual for sailors, parents and coaches

This is book that is good for serious sailors and their coaches. It is thorough and probably the best overall racing guidebook for optimist sailing. It's well written but so stuffed with information that it's a book to read over and over again.
For a younger audience the "The WINNER'S GUIDE TO OPTIMIST SAILING" is better. That one is not quite as comprehensive but is also well written and with substatial information. It's a book the children could read on their own.
If these were only translated to finnish it would be perfect...

Mauch's Sailboat Guide, Vol. III Review

Mauch's Sailboat Guide, Vol. III

Vol 3 of the 3 volume series. (Vol #1 is ISBN# 0-9642621-0-X,Vol #2 is ISBN# 0-9642621-1-8) To get complete information on anysingle manufacturer you need all 3 volumes. There is alot ofinformation missing (which could probably be gleaned from other brokers files in cooperative effort) but that said there is a lot here. Hopefully for ease of use these will be combined into one volume on any future reprints. Also I hope Ms. Mauch continues work on and expand these volumes to add additional manufacturers, models, and specific interior, exterior, sail plan, number of hulls built, and general quality of construction information for any future reprints (and I promise I'll buy and new edition). The other thing I think would fill a serious void is information on company history, specifically, who has gone out of business, been boughtout or merged. These are great books for recreational sailboat lovers and students of the genre, worth the price. END

Sea Trails: Poems and 1977 Passage Notes Review

Sea Trails: Poems and 1977 Passage Notes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pris Campbell dares to go where others fear to tread, and it is that mindset of honesty that drives her journal about a boat journey along the Atlantic Coast from Massachusetts to Florida, July to November, 1977 into a very special poetic work. The book is written on several levels: first, this is a mariner's log, a personal journal, an examination of the motivations for a prolonged voyage in the midst of a relationship that is rocky, a book of maps and sea jargon, and second it is a collection of poems written as the heart's response to the voyage nautical and emotional. It works splendidly well.
The mariner log of the book is fine reading for those with adventurous hearts such as Campbell who, like Melville and Conrad before her, are passionate about the great waters of the sea. And just as in the writings of those men, the expanse of salt air wafting through the crevices of the body somehow frees the spirit to mourn, to long for, to breathe romance. Campbell has the gift for relating the needs for sensual pleasures along side the quiet hurt when those pleasures are incomplete. The man with whom Campbell travels is the echo of a relationship soured and in ways the author hopes that the time alone, the element of being out on the sea without the distractions of living ashore, may possible heal the rifts. But her poetry tells us otherwise. An excerpt from 'Streaking': 'I want him inside me before weighing anchor,/ certain Neptune will rise, enraged and hungry,/ out of those black jersey seas/to swallow us whole on this long night run/ from Manisquan to Atlantic City./ I pull him into me hard --wild animals rutting/in this coffin-like cabin, feet kick yes/ to seawater slosh outside./We stopped making love months ago./ Now we just use each other's bodies/ to unleash out fears and occasionally/ discover buried treasure.'...etc
She can wax eloquent about sights along the way of the passage, time ashore for supplies, etc, and in these poems she is both a painter of atmosphere and a vessel of vulnerability:
Charleston
Shore houses are fitted with Widows walks,
railed rooftop platforms where women once
watched the heaving horizon for their men to return.
Listen closely and you can hear a skirt rustle,
the occasional tread of women's feet.
The city is a Monet painting.
Flowers are sold on street corners by black women,
hair bound in scarves the color of butterflies.
The old South still folds into itself and endures.
We wander into what we think is a public garden,
sit breathing pink blossoms, legs sprawled.
An elderly man in a blue blazer, dollar bills hovering
in speech bubbles over his head, asks us to leave.
We trudge back onto pastel street in faded jeans,
sailing hats encrusted with sea salt.
Bt mid-afternoon, we hold hands.
Some days forgiveness comes easier than others.
It drifts in on white magnolia blossoms.
To share more of Pris Campbell's SEA TRAILS would be akin to walking into a darkened movie house in the middle of a drama. This book is satisfying on all levels and easily convinces us of the mind and talent of a very gifted lady. Spend time on this voyage of body and spirit and discover the universals that fill every page. Grady Harp, August 11

We never see things in themselves, only things as they appear to our own particular sensibilities, moods, and associations.Nowhere is that clearer than in poetry, and nowhere in poetry is that clearer than in Pris Campbell's new book, Sea Trails.Part travelogue and part poetic narrative, the book brilliantly counter-poses poetic revelations of the speaker as she moves from "in love" to "out of love" and prose descriptions of a journey down the American Intracoastal Waterway, including details of the physical workings of the journey and of the landscapes which sustain her.An emotional, sensual, and visceral joy to read. Keep with Don Casey. This book was useless. There were no specific projects that were detailed from start to finish. There was one page about screw types which was heplful, but very basic. If you have ever done any work on your boat, you won't need or want this book. If you want to start to do some work, find another book, this won't help at all.

Bevis, the Story of a Boy Review

Bevis, the Story of a Boy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Shortly before Richard Jefferies first became ill he wrote two children's books, Wood Magic and Bevis, published in 1881 and 1882. The latter has been widely regarded as a classic boys' book and, based on Jefferies' own childhood at Coate, it follows the adventures of two boys, Bevis and Mark. They first 'discover' a large lake close to their home which they imagine to be a vast inland sea surrounded by a jungle inhabited by savages and wild beasts. After re-fighting the Battle of Pharsalia (between Julius Caesar and Pompey) with their friends, Bevis and Mark build a raft and cross to an island in the lake. Equipped with a few provisions and their own home-made shotgun, they live among nature for several days, learning the arts of survival and much about themselves in the process. Bevis is a celebration of the vigour and freedom of a childhood spent in the countryside, 'where there was magic in everything, blades of grass and stars, the sun and the stones upon the ground'.

O'Reiley's Island Review

O'Reiley's Island
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
O'Reiley's Island tells the story of young Thomas O'Reiley's escape from a crime he's not really sure he committed. What he is sure of is he is poor and police are in pursuit. The setting is at first turn of the 20th century San Francisco where teen-aged O'Reiley and his mother struggle to survive. Thomas has to run for it when it appears he is involved in a murder. He ships out aboard an ill-fated cargo vessel and winds up a sole survivor on an uninhabited island. How Thomas conquers his fears and adapts to his surroundings makes an interesting and educational read. While this book is cleaver and clean enough for juvenile readers, it will hold the interest of adults as well. Though this story has a happy ending and the epilogue has a "and he lived happily ever after" summary, we should hear more from this interesting character.

Thomas O'Reiley is nineteen years old when he is accused of murder and flees for his life from San Francisco in the late eighteen-hundreds. Existence as he has known it ends when he finds himself alone on an isolated island in the South Pacific. Days and weeks and months become years as his survival depends upon emergent courage and resourcefulness as well as the gradually awakening desire to reconcile his life in San Francisco and perhaps return to the young woman he barely knows. But the risks he faces are formidable as thousands of miles of open sea separate him from his ultimate destination.O'Reiley's Island is an account of courageous personal initiative, self awakening and determination as young O'Reiley faces the ghosts of his past and the awful uncertainty of his future—the hangman's noose.

Smuggler's Wind
This is an excellent true story of sailing and living on the edge. If you don't like the tremendous risks of living on the edge let this guy do it for you. He tells the story of living in Japan and building a boat, not to mention having a kid while doing it (how do people do this?) and then he needed more money for the boat. A friend invited him to smuggle some Marijuana into Australia on a sailing yacht. Risk, 28 years in prison. Reward, tons of money for his boat and living! He takes the risk and sails with the friend and another guy to India to get the Marijuana then they decide to deliver it to the southern part of Australia which is safer as the winds and seas are so ferocious that no other smugglers would try this. Sailors will love all of th sailing descriptions and problems encountered and adventure lovers will love everything. The author is a rough and tough survivor type but also well read which makes the writing more interesting. They finally succeed albeit sometimes horrible and seemingly insurmountable problems. All while supporting a wife an two kids!

Wind and Tide: An Introduction to Cruising in Pure Sailing Craft
Average Reviews:

It's been a long time since I read a sailing book that had anything to do with sailing. This book is ONLY about sailing. All of us who sail dream of cruising in an engineless sailboat, but we've been taught to think that such a boat is impossible or impractical. FitzGerald makes a strong case that a sailboat may be MORE practical than a motorsailor, and that the purposes we have in going to sea may only be met by going to sea in a sailboat. A great read, inspiration, the only complaint I have is the book is too short!

No Dribbling the Squid: Octopush, Shin Kicking, Elephant Polo, and Other Oddball Sports Review

No Dribbling the Squid: Octopush, Shin Kicking, Elephant Polo, and Other Oddball Sports
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Michael J. Rosen and Ben Kassoy's No Dribbling the Squid: Octopush, Shin Kicking, Elephant Polo and Other Oddball Sports is a vibrant and hilarious account of the world's most quirky and unconventional competitions, which includes such bizarre sports as wife carrying, sauna endurance contests, and professional rock, paper, scissors.
Each page is a spectacle in itself, exploding with high-action, full-color photos (whether of snowball fighters, lawnmower racers, or mountain unicyclists), along with clever and punchy writing that gets you in, out, and onto the next eccentric contest.
With the holidays approaching, I bought several copies for family and friends, even those aren't sports fans (being a lover of the weird and whacky will do). I could picture my nephew practicing his cannonballs off the high dive after reading about professional splashdiving or, in winter, mounting a toilet on skis to prepare for the outhouse racing season. My sister, the world traveler and festival-seeker, might have to stop by Spain's giant tomato fight, England's shin kicking competition, or Scotland's Bog Snorkelling Championships after reading about them in No Dribbling the Squid.
I also love checking out the Featured Freaky Sport of the Week on the book's website, [...], and, as a fan of Squid on[...], I took the Find Your Inner Oddball Athlete quiz to discover, with great amusement, that I am destined to be a chess boxer. My areas of expertise: brains, brawn, and books! Squid is a knockout (or, if you will, a checkmate)!
