(More customer reviews)Unlike many other sailing texts, this book covered a broad range of boating topics. Clearly not a sailor's fine-tuning tome, this book surprised me, however, by covering sail trim and boat balancing very adequately, and in some cases more clearly than more advanced sailing manuals. Since it's written for sailors in U.S. waters, it covers topics such as trailering, waterway navigation, and rules of the road for the U.S. more specifically than any other text I've seen.
All in all, I'd say this is my top choice for a text for a new sailor who's got down the sailing basics and needs to know the many practical aspects of safe sailing in U.S. waters.

The Laser Book (Laser Book: Laser Sailing from Start to Finish) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this book for my 15 year old nephew who just bought his first used (and pretty beaten up) Laser. I'm probably guilty of making him do so: I have sailed Lasers for the past 20 years and let my nephew out on his own on mine for the last couple of years, ever since he was heavy enough to get it upright again after capsizing...
As so many books of this kind, it is trying to serve everyone's needs. But that's really impossible to do. While many things discussed are excellent for the beginner, many times the language used makes only sense if you have been sailing for quite some time. The book puts a lot of emphasis on racing the boat, yet for the new Laser owner this may be in the more distant future. The book probably makes the most sense for a somewhat experienced sailor who decides to buy a Laser and plans on racing it. A young sailor will frequently struggle with the technical terms. And there is not that much more an experienced sailor couldn't learn on his or her own.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading it and even after all the years sailing this fun boat, I found a few new things. And my nephew may not get everything on first try, but after some research it will make more sense. I have no regrets that I bought it.

Catamaran Tuning Guide Review

(More customer reviews)The first chapters of the book are pretty basic and the experienced sailor will not learn much. The last chapters are more interesting: they explain what happens if you pull on a certain string, tigthen this sidestays, etc.
The presentation and graphics are so low in quality that they seems to have been done on a computer from the mid 80's. It's also pretty obvious that there was no quality control on the text since long passages are sometimes repeated on the same page.
At this price, you can buy books with color photographs, clear graphics and drawings on high quality paper. In its present format, this book is not worth more than $ 5.

However, after reading it I was able to easily handle a Hobie 16 without previously ever having been on one. The book explains from buying your first boat all the way to advanced sailboat handling. It is a must read for anyone considering taking up catamaran sailing as a hobby.

The Isler couple, both world class sailors, spice up the material with personal amusing anecdotes of their sailing experiences (and occasional mishaps). Plenty of illustrations add to the book's educational value. I can't imagine a better intro book to the subject.

The illustrations are excellent (the best I've seen) and plentiful. The book is also very comprehensive. If you are an experienced sailor and are looking for a book to improve your racing skills, then this is not the a book for you. The book also has videos that go along with the text.
