Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This 112-page papercover book is ideal for farmers, extension educators, soil conservationists, and crop advisors. Areas covered include the contribution of earthworms to good soil tilth, practical identification of common genera and species, biology of earthworms, earthworm habitat under various cultural practices, how to increase earthworm populations on the farm, effects of 193 agricultural chemicals on earthworms and a question and answer section. The author presents research findings from scientists as well as anecdotal data from farmers and others 'in the know'. An easy read, this book is a great place to start learning about earthworms under agricultural conditions. Many, many authorities and other contacts are listed in the back of the book. If you want to decrease run-off, lower your fertilizer bill, reduce erosion and make more money on your farm or for your grower clients, this book is the place to start.

Garden Way's Joy of Gardening Review

Garden Way's Joy of Gardening
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Some books are like gold-bearing ore--you have to sift tons of words to find a few nuggets. This book has nuggets on nearly every page. And unlike some authors, Raymond is open-minded to the various gardening methods and has tried them. Even better, he has worked in different soils in different parts of the country. And he is innovative.
I am not a fan of tillers and I am biased against chemicals, so Raymond had to overcome my initial skepticism. He did. While he extols the use of his tiller [he has a long relationship with Troy-Bilt, owned by Garden Way, publishers of this book], he also shows how to garden without one. And in most cases he offers organic alternatives to chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Furthermore, he started out on a farm, paid for his first home with a garden and roadside stand, has appeared in food production documentaries and has given gardening classes throughout the country, face-to-face and on radio and television.
I do not agree with all he writes, nor is he inclusive of all gardening methods, for instance Fukuoka's no-till, Steiner's biodynamics or Mollison's permaculture. But in gardening, the proof is in the eating and it is clear that Dick Raymond eats very well. Beginning, mid-field and advanced gardeners alike will learn valuable techniques for soil enrichment, bed-building, seed-growing, transplanting, spacing, weed-killing and insect-handling. He is excellent on green manure crops, seeding and harvesting. I was especially taken with his Eternal Yield experimental plots, where he imports only seeds and lime but has improved yields and soil over a ten-year period. "My goal was to plant different sequences of green manure crops to see if they alone could provide all the nutrients food crops need. My guidelines were simple: don't add any fertilizer, compost, or manures to the soil. As for organic matter, till under only the crops that grow on the plot. Do not bring in any outside material--no leaves, no mulch, nothing."
This is the best-illustrated gardening book I have found. Hundreds of color photos and drawings on high-quality paper illustrate every lesson. All popular plants are given their own coverage including gourds, peanuts and sunflowers. In the section on pests I learned a technique I am eager to try on the mole army here--sticking pieces of blackberry canes into the runways. There is an insect pest section as well as one on diseases. An eight-page planting guide supplements and synopsizes earlier coverage, there are maps on first- and last-expected frost dates. The index is small but adequate.
Should your budget allow only one gardening book, this is as good as you can do.

The New Organic Grower: A Master's Manual of Tools and Techniques for the Home and Market Gardener (A Gardener's Supply Book) Review

The New Organic Grower: A Master's Manual of Tools and Techniques for the Home and Market Gardener (A Gardener's Supply Book)
Average Reviews:

This amounts to the 'bible' of organic growing. It is informative and inspirational in equal measure. While the approach Coleman takes is particularly suited to market gardening, it is also eminently suitable for smaller-scale gardeners who simply wish to feed their family.
Coleman writes, 'The premise of this book is that you can make a good living on 5 acres or less of intensive vegetable production. Thus it is those acres that concern us most.' (p16)
In a nutshell, Coleman's approach is to:
- plan and market effectively
- develop the healthiest soil
- grow the most valuable crops
- extend the growing season to the maximum
He show just how to do this in 334 pages with 28 chapters and four appendices. There isn't space here to offer a contents list, but here are some highlights:
Chapters addressing the question 'why do it?' - Agricultural craftsmanship', 'a final question'
Chapters on 'season extension', mobile greenhouses and 'the winter garden'.
'Plant-positive' solutions to pests.
Chapters on marketing strategy and marketing.
However, 'The New Organic Grower' covers far more than this - in fact everything you could need to start successful organic vegetable production! Readers living in cool/temperate climates may also want to check out Coleman's other popular book, 'Four Season Harvest'.

The Rototiller in America Review

The Rototiller in America

Well-researched, well-documented, but gives only a passing reference to the most important manufacturer, Gravely.

The rototiller as we know it started with the 1910 Patent by Konrad von Meyenburg of Switzerland. In his patent von Meyenburg detailed his power-driven flexibly mounted tines. The principle of his design as explained in his patent application is: "The power of earth cutting by edge tools depending mainly upon the sharpness, section and surfaceof the tools and their free cutting, I make themof small section and surface, preferably self-sharpening, elastic and independent; so that each edge, also rotated mainly in a circle, may give way laterally and backwardly, like the claws of a scraping animal, and follow the way of least resistance upon a trembling or shivery curve". In the early 1930's with America and the rest of the world sinking into The Great Depression only three companies were involved in the walk behind rotary tillage industry. One started as a distributor of European machines, one modified European models and renamed them, and the last as a manufacturer.

I wish I would have kept looking for a high-wheel cultivator, but settled on this one. We acquired an old one years ago that was very used when we got it, and used it for years and years after without any problems. It got lost in a move; otherwise I would still be using it. The implements on this on bend very easily. I would have thought they would have at least been heat-treated/tempered. The frame also flexes and bends very easy. I am going to rework/reinforce this one since we bought it and make some new attachments, but would not have to do this if it was built right from the beginning. Keep looking

Earthway Tubular Steel High Wheel Cultivator 6500 Review

Earthway Tubular Steel High Wheel Cultivator 6500
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We brought an Earthway high wheel garden cultivator to a family member in Ireland who has a large organic vegetable garden. It works amazingly well. We have only used the five-prong cultivator to weed between the crop rows in pretty heavy clay soil, and have yet to try the other attachments. It requires only the technique of using a manual push mower: one step forward at a time; a shallow pass the first time and a deeper pass the second; going down the grade rather than up it; and so on. We are so impressed with it that we've just ordered one for our home garden and allotment in California. It makes weeding a pleasure and saves our backs.
September 2, 2007 follow-up. We did not have such good luck with our second cultivator. It arrived packaged in the original Earthway box, but it was missing two vital parts and the parts that were sent were painted black, not the usual powdered steel finish. We called Earthway, which promptly sent the two parts and had no explanation why the hoe was now painted black. I asked them to make sure that the missing parts were black as well. The two parts arrived painted gray, so we have a 2-tone hoe. Additionally, the main tool, the 5-clawed cultivator, had too much solder on one of its two parts, so they did not fit together smoothly, with the result that our hoe is somewhat lopsided when it is standing up. It still works well, but its appearance and lopsidedness take away some of the pleasure of using it. We emailed Earthway about it, but never received a response.

Bought this attachment for my Mantis and it works great. The problem is with Amazon. I bought it for around ninety dollars, then the price dropped to under sixty dollars. Up until their unpublicized policy change in September, you could request the difference in price credited back to you if the purchase was less than 30 days before price drop. I guess I bought mine after the deadline, as I requested a credit for the price difference and was denied stating their new policy. Since I now have no recourse if a better price is advertised,I have been more hesitant buying products from Amazon since the policy change.

Garden Weasel - 90204 Garden Weasel

I bought this thinking it would be great for my garden, but the rotating blades are not sharp at all and it barely pulls up any of the weeds. I wouldn't get this if your trying to keep the weeds down in your garden, better to use a hoe. It might be ok for prepping the soil before planting, making some rows with two blades on the outside, or keep weeded soil around your garden turned up. But, for removing weeds it kind of rolls right over them and you keep having to go over the same spot many many times and still not a good result.

Hound Dog Products Planting Auger #HDP9-6
I couldn't believe I wouldn't get some usefulness from my newly purchased Hound Dog auger, as the areas i wished to plant are recently tilled and planted (I am putting in end-of-summer replacement color), and found this auger stalled out before cutting through hair-fine roots near the surface. Arrrrgh. The wrenching of my wrist when the auger froze my 18v drill was worse then if I had dug the hole by hand. I tried different speeds, and practiced in different soils around the garden to no good effect. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS ITEM!!!!! I wish I'd read the previous review before my purchase, and can only OSH will reimburse me when they see the length of the register tape upon which this item was purchasedl

Earthway 1001-B Precision Garden Seeder with 6 Seed Plates Review

Earthway 1001-B Precision Garden Seeder with 6 Seed Plates
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While this is a good tool on the whole -- and not too expensive either -- it still isn't for every gardener nor for every purpose in the garden. To remove all doubt, perhaps it should not go without saying that this is not a tool for making hills for melons, squash, or zukes. It will not help you with transplants such as tomatoes, nor will it handle seed potatoes. No, this seeder is for rows of things like beans and corn, and in these cases it shines. I still think, however, that you have to be planting a pretty big garden to make it worth your time to set-up the Earthway seeder, learn to use it, store it, and maintain it.
On the pro side, for instance, I used my new Earthway seeder to plant more than 700 row-feet of popcorn. Wow! The Earthway seeder practically paid for itself that day, since it allowed me to plant the entire plot in less than 45 minutes and with no bending over! I also used it to plant plots of field corn, beans, and beets.
Here are my notes, for what they're worth:
1.) Have freshly tilled, fine, debris-free soil. It is difficult to push the seeder through crusted soil or anything with too many lumps in it, and you won't get those perfectly straight rows if you're struggling just to move forward. Also, too much surface trash will be a problem for the little chain that drags behind and covers the seed. Hint: do "dry runs" with the seeder at the proper depth, but without seed in the bin. This will give you a sense of how well it's going to work before you commit your seed, and it helps to mark your rows in advance too.
2.) Have enough seed, and watch the seed plate closely as it turns. If the seed bin gets low, the pockets in the seed plates will often fail to scoop up the seeds in a regular fashion. You'll end up with a lot of skips. Of course, if you're not buying your seed at least ¼ pound at a time, I'm not sure why you'd want this tool anyhow.
3.) Select your seed plate carefully, and if needed test it with the seed before use. (Attach a plastic bag under the seeder or something.) For example, I had a limited quantity of small soup beans. I popped in the bean plate and made two rows. Before the end of the second row, however, I was out of seed, which should not have been the case. I didn't figure this out till after the seeds sprouted: that seed plate scooped up those small beans two at a time and double-planted the first row, leaving insufficient seed for the second row.
4.) If you are considering the Fert-A-Ply attachment for the seeder, re-think that. I did not realize till the attachment arrived that I could not use it at the same time as I planted -- meaning that it took re-configuring the seeder and another full set of passes to apply an amendment to my rows. Also, the construction and the few moving parts of the attachment are extremely chintzy. I could not get mine adjusted well and used quite a bit more expensive material than I intended.
5.) The assumption for the Earthway seeder is that your seed is dry. If you like to soak your seeds before planting, or if you want to wet-innoculate things like green beans before planting, I don't think this is the tool for those cases.
6.) I have not tried the seeder with pelleted seeds of any kind, but I bet it would work well for that. Again, pick your seed plate carefully.
7.) Of course, straight rows are an advantage for mechanized cultivation equipment in your garden or even for zipping through the rows with a wheel hoe or high-wheel cultivator. Even if you're not obsessive about straight rows, however, this seeder still can be a time- and back-saver.
I hope this helps you to make a more informed choice.

Fiskars 7977 Composite Cultivator Review

Lots of folks gripe about these great Fiskar composite garden hand tools.
Such people obviously do not garden.
This is the best at what it does: hand cultivation and weeding of your prepared garden beds.
It is not dynamite. It is not a crow bar. It will not extract boulders from your granite stone New England field.
It weeds and cultivates and aerates with minimum of damage your prepared and composted vegetable and flower garden.
The best. Better than metal. Less damage to all involved, including the plants.
Sure, maybe you can find one cheaper at your city's big box shop.
It won't be the fine Fiskar brand name. And you'll waste your own fuel instead of the USPS's gas.
Best tool. All right price. Best at what it does.
Okay. I admit it. It won't plow your lower 40.
But it is not designed to.

Also a great backscratcher for those hard to reach spots.
