(More customer reviews)The english release for Wild Adapter 1 is, for some reason, not listed on Amazon. Anyway, this story uses the 2 main characters of an old 2-shot series called "Shiritsu Araiso Koutou Gakkou Seitokai Shikkoubu" & plays on lots of gay jokes (even more than Saiyuki does). Like all of Minekura's characters, they bear a heavy resemblance to someone in another series of hers. Take Saiyuki's Sanzo, glue a pair of glasses to his face, & dye his hair black & you have yourself Makoto Kubota; the antagonizing protagonist. Hell, they even have the same hair style & chain smoking habbits). Now take Saiyuki's Goku, ditch the headband, make him look significantly older, & change all the monkey jokes into kitten jokes. Sanada lookes like Jojyo in his 50s & Saori looks like Hazel (& nothing like a girl).

(More customer reviews)"Summoner Girl" by Hiroshi Kubota follows the adventures of a 4th grade girl named Hibiki who has just been made head of her clan--a famous, old line of summoners, who basically summon mythical creatures to possess them so that they can use their magical powers to defeat bad spirits who cause trouble in the human world. Her formidably grandmother (the former head of the clan) has charged her with finding the six rikutou gems--magical treasures that, when gathered, will cause some kind of disaster to befall the world that Hibiki will have to defeat in order to be recognized as the Head of the Exorcist Underground (the underworld of summoners, exorcists, etc), which her clan belongs to. To aid her, Hibiki has five guardian spirits (shikigami) whose powers she summons to help her fight off the baddies (and whose wildly disparate and opinionated personalities provide lots of great humor and snarky commentary throughout).
Nothing too ground-breaking about that premise, perhaps, but the execution (writing, art, overall storytelling and plots) of this magical girl manga is very competent and the humor very solid as well as 100% clean enough for kids. It would be an excellent title for younger audiences who will find the sweet but self-assured and competent Hibiki a sympathetic protagonist, and her lively adventures with her magical friends entertaining.
Also, the simple but interesting "magic system" involving the five elements and how they either counter, bolster or are bolstered by other elements adds a level of strategy to Hibiki's battles that kids (especially those who liked Magic the Gathering) will probably find engaging as well.
Overall, an excellent title for younger manga fans and a fun if casual read for older fans.
