The unique fun of catamaran sailing is in the power and acceleration - from my first sail on a cat, I knew this was the boat for me.
Catamarans are the fastest of all conventional sailing craft and among the most thrilling. They are different from monohulls and however good you are in a sailing dinghy you will find you have new skills to learn when you transfer to a cat.
Whatever your previous experience, this book will have you fizzing over the water in no time. It starts right at the beginning with a simple explanation of how the wind and sails work, then rapidly propels you forward to your first sail and on to your first race.
The final section opens up a new world of high-performance skills: gennaker sailing, twin-wire trapezing and tuning a powerful racing rig.

How to Rent a Fire Lookout in the Pacific Northwest Review

How to Rent a Fire Lookout in the Pacific Northwest

Just astounding! I have stayed at three of the lookout featured in the book, and they are every bit as wonderful as the book illustrates. This book is a must for the nature lover. I'm not much of a hiker or skier, so fortunately this book tells you how difficult it is to reach each lookout. And most all the lookouts are a mere $25-$40 a night! My lookout trips have been the best vacations I've ever had. Please, please pick up this book if you plan to be in Oregon for any length of time and love great scenery...

Fundamentals of Sailing, Cruising, and Racing Review

Fundamentals of Sailing, Cruising, and Racing
Average Reviews:

This is one of the best books on general sailing that I have ever read. It comes in second only to 'Sailing For Dummies' and that is just by a very slim margin. I have both books in my sailing library and between them, I have more than enough reference material to cover almost any sailing situation. This book should satisfy both beginning and experienced sailors alike. Good job...

Traditional Bowyers Encyclopedia: 2nd Edition - Revised and Updated Review

Traditional Bowyers Encyclopedia: 2nd Edition - Revised and Updated
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is just a reprint of Bertalan's 1989 book, with absolutely nothing added except a few pages in the end and changing the word Bible to Encyclopedia; it is neither. It is a personal view of the author's reflections of has-been bow builders in the archery world.
Almost every bowyer in this book is out of business...and have been for almost twenty years since it was written..yes, that's right; it was written twenty years ago! Some of the bowyers have been dead almost as long.
At the time it was original published, most of the bowyers mentioned were still in business; in a year over half of them were already gone.
I asked T.J. Conrads why he endorsed it. He told me he wrote that quote 20 years ago and was rather upset that his name appeared on this new edition as he was not asked and would not have endorsed it. In fact, all the endorsements are 20-years old!

I first ran across this gem at a friend's home during 2009. We both own older boats. I thought this was an excellant book and came home and order a used copy for my library. Spurr has several worth while books on the market.

Beyond the Bleep: The Definitive Unauthorized Guide to What the Bleep Do We Know? Review

Beyond the Bleep: The Definitive Unauthorized Guide to What the Bleep Do We Know
Average Reviews:

As a physics buff, I generally don't find my way into the new age section of the bookstore, or even watch new-agey films. Wind chimes sound like fingernails on a blackboard to me. But all my friends were lauding about this What The Bleep movie, and so rather than get sucked into another unpleasant movie experience, I picked up this little guide book to get a sense what all their clamor was about.
I was pleasantly surprised to see some really hard science being tackled by the author Alexandra Bruce in a really accessible, welcoming way. And even the New Age stuff was pretty palatable to my rational materialist mindset.
The makers of the film should consider Beyond The Bleep a welcome gift, because not only did I go see the movie, but talked for hours with my friends about it. What a really interesting, thought-provoking film! This book helped to open the door for me to an alternate way at looking at the universe.

What the Bleep Do We Know!? is the biggest New Age movie phenomenon . . . EVER! Spreading by word of mouth and an obsessive grass-roots following in the vein of The Passion of the Christ, in which discussion groups spontaneously form and people who never go to the movies go over and over again, What the Bleep Do We Know!? is a wake-up call to the millions of people searching for a voice somewhere in this fragmented culture who have been awaiting a catalyst.

This outrageous film plunges you into a world where quantum uncertainty is demonstrated—where neurological processes and perceptual shifts are engaged and lived by its protagonist—where everything is alive, and reality is changed by every thought. What the Bleep Do We Know!? gives voice to the modern-day radical souls of science, bringing their genius to millions.

What the Bleep Do We Know!? says that science and spirituality are not different modes of thought, but are in fact describing the same thing. And it brings the power back to the individual man and woman as it demonstrates creation as the god-like capacity of every individual.

In Beyond the Bleep, Alexandra Bruce illuminates the personalities and teachings of the physicists, neurologists, anesthesiologists, physicians, spiritual teachers, mystics, and scholars in the film, as well as the filmmakers, helping the reader sort through their wilder and woollier theories with simple explanations of the cutting-edge science on which they are based. The phenomenon of the movie is only just beginning, spreading outwards from the yoga studios and health food stores of the Pacific Northwest across America and the world. There is a huge demand for more information on the topics presented in the film; Beyond the Bleep is the place to start.

Alexandra Bruce's articles on urban legends and metaphysical and quantum physics themes have been published in Paranoia magazine, Steamshovel Press, Borderland Sciences, and Disinfo.com. She recently translated the book Celestial Secrets, The Hidden History of the Mystery of Fátima with a foreword by Jim Marrs. She lives in Rio de Janeiro.

Men Against the Sea: A Novel Review

Men Against the Sea: A Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It was a hot summer day, and I was in the mood for a sea story. I luckily picked up MEN AGAINST THE SEA and quickly became engrossed. Where the prequel, MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, was a story of a mutiny, this one was one of the best men against the elements stories ever penned. We see a very different Captain Bligh, whose temper still flares up from time to time, but who this time is successful in managing a small crew of men in an open boat over 3,000 miles from the site of the mutiny to Timor, which is today part of Indonesia.
Fletcher Christian and his mutineers allow Bligh and his loyalists no guns, three cutlasses, a small medical kit, and a pitiful store of water and victuals. Their boat must skirt all inhabited islands because they had no gifts to give to the natives -- which in the islands at that time meant that they were risking attack every time. Their water supply came from rainstorms and occasional landings for food. They had no gear for fishing. All they had to go on were Bligh's knowledge and guts.
I actually prefer this book to MUTINY and now eagerly look forward to seeing if PITCAIRN'S ISLAND, the third volume in the trilogy, is as good.
