What a beautiful way to see America! This book has it all. From the fall colors of New England to the majestic mountains to the small towns in every state. Hiroji doesn't just focus on the scenery but includes the faces of America in his book. From a local town meeting to an air show to automobile workers. Whenever I show this book to my friends, they are so mesmorized by the photographs that I've had to loan it out a few times. And I love hearing their stories of places they've been when they see it in the book. They are most surprised when they see me in the book! I'm in photograph 16 teaching computers to kids at a computer camp. But don't let that influence your decision to purchase this book. It should be on every coffee table in every house or business!

Digital Photography Boot Camp: A Step-by-Step Guide for Professionals Review

Digital Photography Boot Camp: A Step-by-Step Guide for Professionals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Kevin Kubota was one of the first professional photographers to turn to digital photography. After being asked by other professionals about digital techniques he began Kubota Workshops (www.kubotaworkshops.com) and began teaching the Digital Photography Boot Camp where professional photographers would spend a week learning enough to make the transition to digital. This book is an on paper view of the workshop. It cannot, of course, replace the full week of hands on personally supervised workshop, but it can explain the overall concepts, it can provide a professional to professional view of the digital process and enable the professional photographer to take the expertise he already has to transition to digital.
The book covers all aspects digital photography, but for professionals. It doesn't go review all the cameras, it assumes that as a pro you'll have a digital SLR not a point and shoot. And of course the 'digital dark room' he uses is Photoshop. Again this is not a book on Photoshop, but it does show the pro what Photoshop can do to enhance your pictures.
By a pro, for a pro.

This approach to navigating the digital camera universe details the technical and creative changes that digital cameras have brought to traditional film photography. From the camera to the desktop, photographers learn how to cultivate a seamless digital workflow that can be applied to a studio or lab of any size. The preview stage, with tips on workflow output with slides, Web galleries, proof sheets, and prints is emphasized, providing photographers with the image techniques that can make or break the sale. A cache of the author's self-assignments, personal anecdotes, and insights are included to help photographers analyze scenes, develop ideas, and put their artistic vision into action with their new set of digitally enhanced tools.

Fighting Karate Gosoku Ryu Hard Fast Style (Unique literary books of the world) Review

Fighting Karate Gosoku Ryu Hard Fast Style (Unique literary books of the world)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had the privilege and honor to have been trained in Master Kubota's Kubotan system many years ago. It was truly an education in effective technique and pain. Though my own study has been primarily in Shotokan Karate, I still sought out other Japanese and Korean systems to learn as much as I could from other masters. This excellent text goes into detail on his Gosoku Ryu (Strong and Fast) karate system. He covers the basic stances, movement, kicks, punches, strikes, and kata in this volume. Because of Kobota's wide and varied back-ground he included techniques from other combat systems when developing Gosoku Ryu.
In conclusion, this is a fantastic basic guide, that when used in combination with actual hands-on training with a Gosoku Ryu instructor, will produce excellent results.
Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Police Yawara Stick Techniques,Univ. Of Ill Press).

Itchiku Kubota: Kimono in the ''Tsujigahana'' Tradition: Exhibition Catalog Review

Itchiku Kubota: Kimono in the ''Tsujigahana'' Tradition: Exhibition Catalog
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own four books about the art of Itchiku Kubota (deceased 2003), the Japanese master of the art of tsujigahana, one of the major thread-resist traditions of Japan. Kubota used stitch resist to create exhibition kimono of astonishing detail and luminosity. His primary subject matter was nature, in particular, the changing seasons. In the latter part of his career he devoted himself to creating landscapes on kimonos, which now reside in the museum he built for his work near Mt. Fuji. His work is breathtaking and astounding. The atelier he established is continuing to produce kimono, though they are not at the same level as the ones he made.
This is the least informative and attractive of the four books I own. The photographs are very dark and the information about Kubota's work and techniques is very sparse. If you are interested in contemporary tsujigahana, I recommend Kimono as Art: The Landscapes of Itchiku Kubota, a very large format hardcover costing only $1.50 more than the Frankel book, or Opulence: The Kimonos and Robes of Itchiku Kubota, which is out of print but available. These two are well worth the money if you are interested in fabrics produced with this technique.

Catalog of an exhibition held in 1980. Frankel had the rare treat of attending Kubota's first one-man exhibition held in Mikimoto Hall in the Ginza, Tokyo. Frankel marveled at the beauty of his creations & decided it would be a privilege to introduce him & his work to the American public. Kubota answered Frankel's questions concerning the evolvement of his work & its significance within the historical context of ''Tsujigahana'' dyeing of fabrics for kimonos. Contents of this catalog: The Art of ''Itchiku Tsujigahana'' Dyeing, by Tetsuro Kitamura; ''Tsujigahana'' & Itchiku Kubota, by Tomoyuki Yamanobe; ''Itchiku Tsujigahana,'' by Itchiku Kubota; Catalogue; & Glossary. Black & white photos of Kubota and full-color photos of his kimonos.

A photographic portrait of Japan today.
Modern Japan, the second largest economy in the world, is a land of contradictions. Home to some of the most sophisticated technology and manufacturing, it also has communities whose daily life has changed little in the last five hundred years. It is a land of great beauty, both in the landscape and in its celebrations, festivals, and traditional arts. After photographing China, Korea, and the United States, Hiroji Kubota spent three years traveling the length and breadth of Japan's many islands, capturing the magnificent diversity of his own country. From rice paddies to pachinko parlors, ancient temples to the Honda assembly plants, Kobota's lens has captured both the ordinary and the extraordinary. 185 full-color photographs
